Mythology

Mythology is literally the study of stories. Nearly every religion on the planet has stories that are associated with their belief system. We just seem to think of mythology as something akin to a dead language. But mythologies give us timeless stories that help societies throughout time understand everything from why the world exists exist to why humans behave the way we do. These ancient narratives explore all the themes of human experience--love, betrayal, ambition, sacrifice, justice--through characters and conflicts we still connect with today. The sheer number of modern retellings below reveals just how much we love to examine these tales, rethinking the roles of characters through a modern lens. Reading mythology invites readers to recognize archetypal patterns that appear across cultures and history -- helping us to see that we are more connected than we are divided. And finally, reading mythology helps us develop an understanding of the many literary and cultural references that appear in everything from Shakespeare to superhero flims.
